January Birthstone: Garnet

The birthstone gem craze continues!  Certified Gem Affiliate Susan Deshensky has scheduled three classes for the winter session, one for each moth.  These are made using a paper piecing technique developed by MJ Kinman.  You can make one birthstone or all twelve.  There are so many ways you can use these beautiful sparkling gems.  Each block finishes at 17" square.  You could make a Mother's Day quilt featuring the birthstones of her children.  You could make pillows.  Each birthstone has a new technique to learn.  The required pattern and fabric bundle are available at the shop.

The January birthstone is the garnet.  The name is derived from the Latin word granatum, which means pomegranate.  It is so named because many believe that the stone resembles the fruit's red color and seed-like form.  Some people believe that the garnet stimulates metabolism, treats spinal and cellular disorders, purifies and reenergizes the blood, heart and lungs, and regenerates DNA. It also assists the assimilation of minerals and vitamins.
