February Birthstone: Amethyst

The birthstone gem craze continues!  Certified Gem Affiliate Susan Deshensky has scheduled three classes for the winter session, one for each moth.  These are made using a paper piecing technique developed by MJ Kinman.  You can make one birthstone or all twelve.  There are so many ways you can use these beautiful sparkling gems.  Each block finishes at 17" square.  You could make a Mother's Day quilt featuring the birthstones of her children.  You could make pillows.  Each birthstone has a new technique to learn.  The required pattern and fabric bundle are available at the shop.

The February birthstone is the amethyst, a spectacular purple variety of quartz.  The names is derived from the Greek word amethystos, which means not drunk.  (Really!!)  The ancient Greeks believed that the stone protected the wearer from drunkenness.  This is why the Greeks often carved wine goblets from the stone!
